Cooking Mama Loves to Kill Baby Animals

My sister showed this game to me a while ago (She is prone to finding bizarre things on the internet), and it reminded me of the McDonalds game we played in class. The game was created by PETA as a disgusting parody of the game Cooking Mama. If you are not familiar with Cooking Mama, it is just a game where you follow various recipes to make different meals.
I'm not sure if this game would really change anyone's mind about eating meat but I thought it was pretty funny.

  1. Wow. This game was hilarious! I loved the part where you make the stuffing and you have to crack the eggs, and blood comes out of the egg shells. I wonder if this is really what PETA thinks of meat and animal products?

  2. Ick. I had to stop at pulling out the internal organs. Though I will say that this game is actually more realistic about cooking in many ways than the other games that are often out there, as well as the many Food Network TV shows. After all, when was the last time you saw a TV chef dealing with bloody meat or dirty vegetables? For someone like me, that actually cooks and thinks a lot about where my food comes from, the glossy, highly sanitized environments of shows like "Giada at Home" or games like "Cooking Mama" demonstrate that as a culture, we are disconnected from what food actually looks like before it's cooked and served!

On a side note, Merany: have you ever thought about what messages these many online cooking games are sending to women like you and your sister? If you search online for cooking games, note that many of them are targeted specifically at girls. Go to Yahoo! Games and look at Kitchen Brigade, Cake Mania, etc. and just look at the stereotyped gender roles play out!

  3. Out of curiosity I played the game. Although, it was a bit disgusting pulling out the organs and hearing the plopping noise as your cartoon hand sloshed through the cavity, I still think I will be enjoying turkey with my family on Thanksgiving. I also watched the video after playing the game and I think that was ultimately more effective in portraying the cruelty that is inflicted on turkeys then the actual game was. You realize that this method of raising turkeys on a high production scale is inhumane and PETA goes out of their way in their tactics (Florida whale blubber billboard) to get their messages across.

  4. Ahahaha. What a fantastic game....
That was kind of ridiculous. I don't know how far any of you played through. But after you cook the three parts of the horrible turkey meal, they offer you a fourth meal, where you cook a tofu turkey instead of an actual one. Maybe its just me, but over the top statements like this from peta and other organizations actually make me feel less pity for the organization, and in my mind, are less effective.
Nonetheless, I understand the point of the game, and it remains interesting to see video games as a means of illustrating such a message.
